What is MCT Oil?

Until relatively recently MCT Oil was something I had never heard of and certainly knew nothing about. In the past two months that has changed as I read about MCT Oil online by complete chance and so decided to add it to my list of product reviews. First of all I’ll explain what exactly it is…

Firstly you need to know what MCT stands for – medium chain triglycerides i.e. fat. It is a saturated fatty acid derived from coconut oil. MCT oil is basically a healthy oil to add to your diet unlike others oils such as olive oil or butter. MCT oil differs in that it gets through your dietary system quicker than the above mentioned oil and is also a clean option to fuel your body with. This oil eliminates processed ingredients and sugars like those in other oils we may ingest on a daily basis.

Think of MCT Oil as a new energy source and one that is clean and healthy. What I loved about this oil is that it’s both flavourless and clear in colour so it’s perfect for everyone even those who are sensitive to taste.

Kiss My Keto is my chosen brand of MCT Oil for this product review.  As the brand name suggests this MCT Oil product is keto friendly as it contains caprylic acid. Caprylic acid is also known as ‘brain fuel’ and is extracted from coconuts only. C8 (caprylic acid) can be classed as a superfood because its short carbon chain makes it easy to digest resulting in ketone conversion and more energy. I am not following a ketogenic diet myself but I do appreciate the link between ketone production and a clean source of energy (in comparison to energy gained from glucose).

MCT Oil can be a really healthy addition to our diet and slowly but surely I am feeling the benefits of taking this supplement every day. I was always going to be interested in trying a product that has the nickname ‘brainfuel’! One phrase that I can really relate to is ‘mental fog’. Sometimes this fog can really cloud my thinking for a morning, a day or even longer. For me this can happen during times of stress or if I’m feeling overwhelmed for some reason. Also times like these when life isn’t exactly normal and living through multiple lockdowns can see your focus suffer.

According to Kiss My Keto, much of the time the reason we suffer from a lack of focus and become forgetful is down to our brains not getting enough energy. Over half of our brain is made up of fat and so energy is required to fuel it throughout the day. As I mentioned before, MCT’s are short -chain fats and so are absorbed very quickly by the body. Personally this is not a benefit I wanted to avail of but from my research of this product I can provide some information here of the potential support MCT Oil can provide for those trying to lose weight. In conjunction with a weight loss plan MCT oil can help by making you feel fuller after meals. Kiss My Keto provide a link to a study done which shows MCT’s increased hormones which can reduce appetite and increase fullness.

Another positive is the potential of increasing the rate at which your body burns calories. Ingesting MCT oil in comparison to other longer chain oils means you are using this as energy for your body rather than storing the fats. MCT oil also supports good bacteria growing in your gut which can help with your digestion. Such potential results will of course vary from person to person and depends on your own weight loss plan.

How do I take MCT Oil?

What I really like about MCT oil is how easy it is to include in my diet every day. Every morning or afternoon I try to drink a cup of warm water and lemon (slice). So to make this even healthier I decided to add my new MCT Oil to the drink too. As the oil is flavourless and colourless you can’t see or taste the oil. The only way I know it is in my cup is the slight oil layer that is left on my lips after drinking, which actually is really nice!

Other suggestions for serving yourself your MCT oil are…

  • adding it to a salad dressing
  • blending it into your smoothie
  • add it to your coffee or tea
  • simply take half a teaspoon full

My last word on this MCT product is this…the bottle is really big and will last you a long time even if using it regularly. Great size, great price and I am really feeling the results!
